Abstract

This research deals with the topic: (The connotations of the Quranic cosmic verses through Ibn Ashour's interpretation of Liberation and Enlightenment: Surat al-Mofassal as a model). This is done by clarifying the connotations and meanings associated with these verses in doctrinal, ethical, jurisprudence and others.

It uses both the inductive and deductive approaches with the intention to draw readers’ attention to the important aspect of these Quranic cosmic verses, in a time of the dominance of scientific miracle research on this type of verses. This research reveals the diversity of the connotations of the "cosmic verses" and the associated meanings, with the predominance of the doctrinal connotations, especially the connotations illustrating the greatness and oneness of Allah the Almighty, as well as showing the existence of the resurrection (al-ba'ath), and the grace of Allah upon His creation.

The research also reveals the diversity of the ‘cosmic verses’ employed in denoting these meanings, with the accuracy of the Quran in its use and employment so that those intended meanings could provide a strong and appropriate statement indicating its rhetorical miracle.

It points out to the role of the ‘cosmic verses’ in highlighting the greatness of the Holy Quran from several aspects, such as its being and evidence of its divine source (being revealed by God Almighty), pure, exactitude perfect, and reaching the goal in influence and guidance, etc.

It proclaims that Ibn Ashour's was sedate in interpreting these verses.  He was keen to highlight their doctrinal intents, as this is the most important original purpose of the Holy Qur'an. He employed the arts of rhetoric and the science of occasion, as they are important tools in revealing the secrets of the Quran and its secrets and values that are implicitly behind the apparent structure and expressions.

The research demonstrates how Surat al-Mufassil is rich with cosmic verses and their valuable connotations and meanings .

Keywords: cosmic verses - doctrinal connotations - interpretation (tafsir) of Ibn Ashour - Surat al-Mufassil - greatness of the Quran.
